Welcome to the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese Official WYD Pilgrimages
I extend a warm invitation to the youth of our Diocese to participate in World Youth Day Madrid 2011; an international celebration of joy-filled faith.
Echo the footsteps of countless pilgrims by walking the Way of St James, El Camino, as a spiritual preparation for the great celebration of Madrid. Be a part of history by following the sacred road that leads to Santiago De Compostela and then onto the World Youth Day celebrations.
Or journey to Taize, the tiny French hillside community to which young people from all over the world are drawn. Your days here will help you view your daily life in the light of the Gospel in preparation for the World Youth Day celebrations, where in close fellowship, you will become ‘Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith’. (Col 2:7)
Our Diocesan Co-ordinators are committed to ensuring that you will be well prepared and supported through the experience. Your encounter with the youth of the world, in the presence of the Spirit of Christ, will be memorable and life giving.
My dear young people, I ask you to consider the rich opportunity that is presented to you as these opportunities are rarely repeated in one’s life time. I offer my heartfelt blessing as you embark on a path to celebration with our Holy Father.
Bishop Michael Malone Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle

World Youth Day in Madrid will provide the young people of the Archdiocese of Sydney with the opportunity to continue to live the extraordinary experience we had in Sydney in July 2008. We invited the youth of the world to join us and Pope Benedict in Sydney. Now we will join the youth of the world responding to the invitation of Pope Benedict to meet with him in Madrid, Spain, in August 2011.
On Palm Sunday in St Peter’s Square 2009, youth representatives from Australia formally handed over the World Youth Day Cross and Icon to youth representatives from Spain.
It concluded what was a great privilege for the Church here in Australia.
Now I invite you to join with young people from every diocese in Australia who will be pilgrims to Spain to attend the World Youth Day in Madrid in August 2011.
